The UK’s second largest airport, London Gatwick is a vital piece of national infrastructure that helps drive both the regional and national economy. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, over 43 million passengers travelled through the airport in 2024, with access to over 150 short-haul and 53 long-haul destinations, served by more than 57 airlines.
Supporting this mammoth operation is a £2.3 billion asset base. From terminals to shuttles and from baggage handling to retail spaces and toilets, these assets contribute directly to passenger experience every day. London Gatwick has been using EAM from Ultimo to manage and maintain these assets for some time. Their ability to function effectively helps to minimize downtime and mitigate any negative impact on the overall logistics processes.
Last year, the team at London Gatwick began a program to migrate its on premise EAM and ERP systems to the Cloud. I’m proud to say that our project team at Ultimo played a critical role in the successful delivery.
The technical solution and implementation were meticulously planned, with detailed consideration given to every step of the program. The team was optimized to include input from our time-served, and specialist experts
In peak time, around a dozen consultants were involved in setting up the new system and managing the changes in the GIT repository. This crucial central management system enabled a collaborative development, and allowed multiple developers to work on the project simultaneously
We leveraged fleet module experience from within the IFS Ultimo team to ensure a smooth parallel implementation
Together with the third-party supplier Coforge, we conducted an SAP dry run over a weekend to ensure a smooth go-live
A solution for the barcode scanner was configured.
My thanks also goes to the supporting team at London Gatwick who tackled huge workloads.
The new Cloud-based solution went live in mid-November 2024, and more than 900 contractor companies will be introduced to the Ultimo EAM system in 2025. Whilst no project is without challenges, this initiative at London Gatwick is a shining example of the value of a project team for EAM. From communicating with stakeholders, to managing budgets and encouraging collaboration, the margin for error is otherwise huge.
It is London Gatwick vision to be the airport for everyone, whatever your journey. Everyone who works at the airport has a role to play in these ambitions. At Ultimo, we take our role seriously, too.
